Peonies are stunning, fragrant, and beloved by many… which is exactly why they may or may not be watching you.

According to old European legends, peonies are guarded by unseen spirits who do not take kindly to their flowers being disturbed. If you dare to dig up a peony without permission, you will be cursed with relentless bad luck, mysterious whispers, or eerie misfortunes (historical examples include doors slamming on their own and one baker’s bread turning black overnight).

Ancient botanists also reported seeing small, eye-like markings on peony petals—which, honestly, is reason enough to not stare at them too long. Are they markings? Or something else? Science says they’re just natural petal patterns, but science also used to think tomatoes were deadly, so…

Preservation Notes:

  • If your peony plant starts making you feel observed, perhaps it is best left alone.
  • No confirmed reports of curses (but also, no confirmed disproving of them).
